The Crown Prince, we were told by the hotel manager, was out of town, otherwise we would have been introduced. This was a tad disappointing as Shakti Singh (or Ghanerao, as he signs off) is 27, likes tattoos and has a gorgeous dog called Shera... so, reckon we'd have got on pretty well! Shakti is now MD of Ghanerao Hotels, which comprises the Royal Castle and also the Jungle Lodge, about 6 or so kms away, and it turns out that he's pretty hands on with the business, even tweeting and handling the Facebook page himself.
The food was simple but tasty at the Royal Castle, and of particular note desserts wise. Not only did it serve the best rose and pistachio rice pudding we'd ever come across, but after supper we were treated to something I can only describe as being a bit like marzipan but with a slightly different flavour. At Bristow's, we'd had one that was flavoured with rose water, but this one I couldn't place, delicious though it was.
(Some last minute sweet shopping in Mumbai airport, while waiting for my flight back to Heathrow, lead me to believe that it could have been Peda?)
If anyone is making a similar journey to Udaipur, I'd highly recommend that they stop by Ghanerao. It was one of the highlights of my entire trip and I very much hope to go back soon. :-)
