So when a kindly PR from Gourmet Burger Kitchen told me about their seasonal special, the St. Morish burger, purporting to be 'Après Ski in a Bun', I allowed myself to dream and set off to my nearest branch to judge for myself.
Greenwich may not be Alpine, but if you squint at the wood panelled banquette in the upstairs part of the restaurant, you can sort of pretend. And in case winter sports aren't your thing, the seasonal menu also offers the Salvador or Californian burgers as alternatives.
The staff are very friendly in Greenwich, and the order-at-the-counter process is reminiscent of lunchtime carb-loading on the pistes. And because I'm a blue beef kinda girl, the option to choose how I wanted my burger cooked was much appreciated.
Sadly, though it arrived very quickly, when it did it was already a little cold. However, the sweet brioche was very tasty with the onion jam, 6oz 100% beef pattie and Swiss raclette cheese. It was a bit difficult to tell what was what with the decadent inclusion of baconnaise, chilli chocolate ketchup and 'truffled' mushrooms, but the combination worked. And of course such trifles wouldn't matter a jot if we were Swiss-side with off-piste adrenalin still coursing through our veins.
The fries took skinny to another level, and I'm glad the sweet potato fries also adorned my table 'cos they were the tastier choice by far. Garlic lovers can't fail to enjoy the Aioli.
Though my personal preference was actually for my date's avocado-ey Salvador option, which had an excellent chilli kick, overall the St. Morish was a pretty tasty burger, so worth a punt if you can't make it out this season.
But après ski in a bun? Ooh, I don't know about that. GBK's clearly never gone skiing with my crowd. (You can read some of our adventures here.) Perhaps if gluwein or Jager had been on offer, I'd have felt a tad more après, and perhaps been inspired to dance heavily on the tables to 'Come on Eileen' or strip down to my thermals. Luckily for the Saturday afternoon Greenwich burger crowd, this was not the case.
I received a meal voucher from GBK in order to sample the St. Morish burger. Thank you GBK.
